Holiday season: be mindful of cybersecurity even while travelling

27.07.2023 - While you are enjoying your summer holidays and travelling, it is important that you also keep on top of your cybersecurity. Protecting your personal data and avoiding online threats should also be a priority during your trip.

Cybercriminals are very adaptable and try to obtain their victims' data in different ways. Read here the most important cybersecurity points to keep in mind during your trip.

Beware when using public WiFi:
When using public WiFi networks (e.g. in hotels or at railway stations), there is a risk that unauthorised third parties can read or even access your data. If possible, use trustworthy WiFi networks that are password protected or use your phone as a personal hotspot. However, this may incur additional roaming costs.

Beware of public charging stations:
Many public buildings such as airports or railway stations offer USB charging stations. The use of publicly accessible USB charging stations also carries the risk of your devices being infected. Use your own chargers.

To prevent these dangers when charging, it is best to use a power bank. Power banks can be charged at public charging stations. You can then connect your smartphone or tablet to the power bank.

Update your devices:
Keep your devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptops, up to date even while you are on holiday. Install all available security updates and patches to fix possible vulnerabilities and protect against known threats.

Beware of public computers:
Avoid using public computers and devices to access personal or sensitive information. Public computers could be infected with malware that puts your data at risk. If you have no other choice, avoid entering sensitive information such as passwords and credit card information.

Watch out for phishing attempts:
Be alert to phishing attempts, especially emails or messages that seem suspicious. Never give out personal information or click on suspicious links. Always check the authenticity of a website before entering sensitive data.

Be careful of what you post on social media accounts:
Be careful when posting information about your holidays on social media platforms. Sharing travel plans and locations can give burglars and scammers clues about you being away. Also check your privacy settings to ensure that your personal information is only shared with trusted people.

Safe handling of credit cards and payments:
Never use public computers for online banking, credit card payments or other payments. Activate 3D Secure on your credit card. Never let your card out of your sight, even when paying in shops and restaurants. When entering your PIN, shield the keypad well.

Use caution when installing new apps:
Be cautious about installing new apps. Only download them from the official stores and check which rights these apps require. Grant the apps only the most essential rights. For example, a calculator does not need access to the camera.

Opportunity makes the thief:
If possible, always keep your devices with you instead of leaving them unattended. If you are planning a trip to the beach, we recommend that you lock your mobile devices in the safe in your hotel room. When travelling by air, always take electronic devices in your hand luggage.

The threat landscape can change, so it is important to keep up to date with current cybersecurity developments even when on holiday.
