18.04.2024 - A virus scanner helps to ensure that your device is not infected by malware. It is one of the most important software components that protects your device and your data. The program scans new files, e.g. email attachments, and the entire device for signs of infection. It is important to install this software and keep it up to date.
Many newer operating systems already have an integrated firewall, virus protection and an automatic update function. Make sure you activate this function when you are prompted to do so during installation of the operating system.
Beware of fake virus protection
A popular scam used by cybercriminals is to distribute fake antivirus software in order to obtain credit card details or infect devices with malware. They always go about it the same way. First of all, the user receives a warning that the device is infected with malware. They are then asked to download an alleged virus protection program. These notifications usually appear in a separate browser window and the supposed virus protection program looks very similar to legitimate ones. Once the software is installed, the user is usually prompted to purchase a licence and receives a demand for payment.
Recommendations
- Use an antivirus program from an official provider and activate the automatic update function.
- Only obtain virus protection programs from reputable providers via the manufacturer's website.
- Carry out a complete system check regularly.
